California Essay Exam
The State Bar of California writes their own essay questions. (They are not Multistate Essay Exams.) The exam consists of 5 essay questions based on the following subjects: Business Associations (Agency, Corporations, and Partnerships), Civil Procedure (FRCP and CA), Community Property (CA), Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence (FRE and CA), Professional Responsibility (ABA and CA), Real Property, Remedies, Torts, Trust, and Wills and Succession (CA). Through T School’s Write Like a Boss – Essay Style modules and subject specific handouts, practice essays, Essay DNA video modules, and Essay MRI video modules, you will have the resources and confidence that you need to write a passing essay.

Value: Each essay is graded on a scale of 0 to 100 points, for a total of 500 raw points (5 essays x 100 points = 500 points). Each essay is graded in increments of 5 points. A score of 65 – 100 is considered a clear passing score, and a score of 60 and below is typically considered not passing. Your raw score from the 5 essays and from the California Performance Test are added together and then converted to a scaled score that is based on a 2000-point scale. The written exam (essays plus the performance test) is worth 50% of your overall bar exam scaled score.

California Performance Test
The California Performance test is a 90-minute skills-based exam. There is no law that you need to know going into the performance test. The exam is designed to test an applicant’s fundamental lawyering skills by applying law from a closed universe library to a file that contains all the specific facts that the applicant needs to know. The type of assignments that applicants may be required to draft vary and could include, but are not limited to, legal briefs, memorandum to the supervising attorney, letter to client, letter to opposing counsel, opening statement, closing argument, declaration, to name a few. Through T School’s Write Like a Boss – PT Style module and handout and the PT MRI video modules, you will have the resources that you need to write a passing performance test.

Value: The performance test is graded on a scale of 0 to 100 points. The score that you receive is then doubled for a total possible 200 points.

Multistate Bar Exam (MBE)
The MBE consists of 200 multiple choice questions that test the following areas: Civil Procedure, Contracts and Sales, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts. You do not have to know California law for the MBE. Of the 200 questions, 175 are scored questions and 25 are unscored “pretest questions” that are blended in with the 200-question exam. Through T School’s affiliation with UWorld, you will get a special discount that will enable you to have access to their MBE software at your fingertips that will help you conquer the MBE.

Value: The MBE is worth a total of 175 raw points which is then converted to scaled score that is based on a 2000-point scale. The MBE is worth 50% of your overall bar exam scaled score.
